11th January 1949.
A brilliant morning, with clear blue sky & sun, but strong W-NW. wind & gale warnings. Glass at bottom of a trough!

12th. to 15th (Sat.).
Mainly dull, windy, some drizzle on the 14th-15th. No wasps seen though ivy examined on 12th, 13th & 14th. Our second Snowdrop out on 14th.

16th. Jan '49.
A fine (dry) day, entirely dull, with strong W. wind, mild. In afternoon Daisy, Marcus Graham & I took 54 bus to Kimmage Rd. West & walked via The Green Hills & Tymon Castle to Firhouse & so home by bus. N. of Tymon Castle the Hazel bush in hedge over stream in roadside - not out on 8th - now with many ♂︎ catkins & even more ♀︎ flowers "out"! No doubt many Hazels already out in other places earlier than this, but only that on scarp S. of Orwell Bridge (R. Dodder) seen in distance with ♂︎ catkins apparently out about a week ago.

17th Jan.
Very windy (W), mild, with rain blowing in the wind most of the day. Our first Yellow Crocus by path to front gate in flower (under shelter of Aubretia!)

18th Jan.
Also windy (SW) but no rain. Cut back grass!

19th-21st Jan.
Windy, colder, strong NW. wind, but much sun in forenoon. Much ivy still in bloom about Ballyboden on 21st but wind too strong & cold & no wasps to be expected even if any remain alive.

22nd Jan. 1949.
A dry, dull, day; very mild. In afternoon rode on bike via Willington Ho. & Tallaght to near Jobstown & home round old aerodrome via Fortunetown, Ballymount & Kimmage Rd.

23rd Jan.

After shower at 10 AM. a fine day with some sun & strong W. wind. Our 3rd & 4th Snowdrops & 2nd Yellow Crocus out in front garden. Flower buds on Saxifraga apiculata on one inch stalks!

In afternoon took bus to Old Barn & walked back to Firhouse via Woodtown & then bus home.

Saw nothing of interest, except complete absence of Redwings & Fieldfares, &c., in fields - no doubt owing to recent mild weather, though J.P Brunker reports that he had seen no Fieldfares so far this winter.

24th Jan. 1949.

After heavy rain on evening of 23rd & clear frosty night & early morning & a glorious day with 100 per cent sun & no wind. In afternoon walked from bus at Kimmage Cross via Willington House & Templeogue Bridge to Rathfarnham bus. Many small Diptera on the wing ("gnats" & "midges") & saw one Eristalis tenax sunning itself at Willington Ho. & several other Diptera, probably muscids.

In ditch on E. side of road about 200 yards S. of Willington Ho. gate saw Carex otrubae (= vulpina auctt.) which I had not noticed before: several old spikes still on plant.
