186. 12th April 1949. Very mild, almost warm with strong SW. wind & rain or drizzle blowing in the wind all day although sun often nearly out. In afternoon walked to Rathmines, on to Dartry, up Dodder to Orwell Bridge & so home. In garden first flower on a wild mossy Saxifrage out - one of Winders Kerry plants-; Arctostaphylos & Andromeda in flower, Carex montana, & Faris's little Salix cf. repens x? in flower, the latter turning out to be a ♂︎ (& not as I hoped a ♀︎). 13th April 1949. Fresher & drier than 12th. A lovely day & nearly all sunny, but very strong S.W. wind. In afternoon drove to foot of Glenasmole where left car & walked up to upper dam & back to car. Tried sweeping by roadside along lower reservoir (= 1) & found many small hymenoptera out where sheltered from the wind. The following insects swept:- Glenasmole, Co. DU. Taken at 1. [14 mounted & these labelled 18.4.49!] Phygadeuonid ♂︎, ant. 22 = Aspilota nigrescens? ♂︎, ant. 24. Dacnusa longiradialis 2♂︎♂︎ not mtd. D. areolaris 4♂︎♂︎, 2♀︎♀︎: not mtd. 187. 13.4.49, cont. Glenasmole, Co. DU., cont. Taken at 1, cont. Aphidius spp. about 30 ♂︎♂︎ & ♀︎♀︎, small black-legged species! None mtd. Monoctonus caricis 1♂︎, 3♀︎♀︎: not mtd. Proctos. 5 = Chalcids. 3 = Cynipids 3 = Weevil 1 = Peacock Butterfly seen Willow Warblers frequent! Taken at 2. Sawfly: Empria tridens ♂︎! AWS. 19.4.49. Cocoons of Trichiosoma old & new on birch trees below dam; as usual. Aspilota nigrescens? ♀︎, ant. 17. Aphidius spp. same as at 1, about a dozen, mostly ♂︎♂︎: none mtd.
