202.

8th May 1949.

A most perfect day, much softer than previous week & mainly sunny with W. breeze; clouds in afternoon but everything very dry!

Drove via Glenealy to top of what was the oak wood at Clara, Co. WI., arriving about 12 noon. This wood has now been nearly destroyed by Forestry Dept. & replanted with conifers, but some parts not yet quite destroyed. Worked down to river near the Osmunda glade, now partly drained & destroyed, & had lunch on river bank just below this; after lunch walked down river along the new Forestry road, across the "Crony Burn" to where a former swampy place was but now nearly drained. Insects, i.e. hymenoptera, not plentiful, but a good many swept in two areas:-

1 = wood from car to river & down left bank of Avonmore to the "Crony Burn": mostly off birch!
2 = woods for 1/2 mile below the junction of "Crony Burn" & Avonmore, especially Salix, Birch & Alders, which are growing up on site of former swamp.
