11th January 1950.

Again mild so took 10 AM. bus to Crooksling to search The Slade of Saggart to see if any Hymenoptera were about after the mild spell.

Misty rain however set in before the bus reached Jobstown. Nevertheless on reaching Crooksling went down side glen (from Hospital) into The Slade, collecting a few mosses & liverworts on the way; also took specimens of any Diptera & other insects seen hiding under leaves of laurel or running about. Saw no Hymenoptera till I reached the bottom of this side glen, but there more shelter than above & on left bank of stream took a ♂︎ Dacnusa laevipectus sheltering beneath leaf of laurel. Many of these laurels had flower spikes showing two inches or more in height but of course not nearly "in flower". The glen still full of the garden "London Pride". Dropped down into head of the Slade, crossed stream, & worked down left bank to look for shelter, but rain increased about 11.30 & everything soon dripping & little shelter so gave up at 12 noon & caught 12.20 bus home at Crooksling

18th Jan. 1950.

A lovely fine day, mainly sunny but high haze & some low mist over town. Practically no wind but light air from W. to N. In afternoon to 2.5 bus to Old Bawn & walked past Bohernabreena & up lane by the Ballymaice stream to the foot of scarp below outlet of Tumoling Pool & then back same way to bus at Old Bawn, ex Tallaght at 4.10 & so home. Saw Celandine in bud above Bohernabreena & shoots of Arum 3 to 6 inches high by Ballymaice lane.

25th Jan. 1950.

Fine dry weather continued. Mild till 20th & then very cold east wind & several frosty nights. On this day 25th took 10.10 AM bus to Bray & walked over Bray Head to have lunch with John & Una Palmer at Greystone's in their new bungalow. Searched for liverwort Riccia sp. on path at highest point - between the two flights of wooden steps & where I had seen it 20 years ago, but this part of path now quite overgrown with grass, &c & none seen. Continued search in suitable spots & 1/4 mile nearer Greystone - approaching Cable Rock - came on it in small quantity & collected a few bits for Miss Thomson - as well as some mosses. During our walk we saw about 15 plants bearing flowers, including [[?one]] montana, but only four of these were spring flowers - namely Lesser Celandine, Cardamine hirsuta, Barren Strawberry & of course Petasites fragrans.
