10th Aug. 1950. Strong SW. wind - almost gale. Very sunny in morning, cloudy with slight misty drizzle at times in afternoon. Left home about 10 AM. & drove via Crooksling, Tinode & Ballyward Bridge to Woodend (2 3/4 miles E. of Blessington) Co. WI. Left car about 11 AM. & walked up lane towards Blackrock & thence to summit of ridge 1,464 ft. where full gale blowing across ridge from SW. Had lunch at 12.40 in lee of ditch & then walked down to Lugnagun Great & across valley of Woodend Brook to lane (grass grown) along SW. side of Woodend Hill & so back to car. Between 900 & 1,000 feet S. of Woodend Brook, crossed some nice marshy ground with much Narthecium, Drosera rotundifolia & Pinguicula lusitanica in flower. In the lane along Woodend Hill saw a clump of Mentha rotundifolia? though far from any present day habitation. On reaching car at 2.30 tried sweeping roadside along W. side of road [[image]] at Woodend which was in complete shelter & found small Hymenoptera abundant & soon filled a small sucker ( = 1). Then went W. for 1/4 mile toward Blessington Bridge & swept sheltered S. edge of road & field & plantations N. of road & just above level of new Poulaphuca [[Pollaphuca]] reservoir & where swept in 1949 (? date) ( = 2). Here also many small Hymenoptera in shelter.
