A perfect day with light easterly breeze - much less strong than on 31st May.


2nd June 1951. 

Another perfect day, with clouds coming from the west for the first time for some days.  Marcus Graham arrived off the mail boat from Oxford at 8.30 A.M.  Talked - chiefly about Euphorus before lunch, spent some time in garden in afternoon in very hot sun & saw Pemphredon lugubris, Crabro varius (2), C. leucostoma, Odynerus pictus 2♂︎♂︎, Chrysis ignita for the first time this season;  also Halictus rubicundus 1♀︎, H. leucopus many ♀︎♀︎, Andrena jacobi 2♀︎♀︎, Bombus lapidarius a lovely fresh ♀︎ & Vespa germanica

3rd June 1951. Sunday. 

A very fine day but hazy & not the brilliant sun of last few days;  wind light easterly. 

Left home about 10 A.M. & drove to Devils Glen Co. WI., where I arrived at foot of gorge & left car at 11.30.  Conditions just about as perfect as possible for collecting & Marcus Graham & I each filled 3 suckers in area as follows:

1 = lower part of glen for 1/3 mile above lodge where left car 11.30 till 1.0 PM.
2 = upper, open part, of glen above ruined lodge & by zigzag road below waterfall.  1.30 till 3.0 PM
3 = on way down glen between 3.30 & 4.30 PM

Sphecophaga vesparum  ♀︎ caught will hand at lunch: given to Graham!
Perilissus? or genus near same; black & yellow marked ♂︎, ant. 32.
