12th April 1952. 

A most beautiful sunny day, with very hot sun over Dublin & the plain.  In afternoon drove to Deey Lock on Royal Canal, Co. KD.  Did a little sweeping inside Mr. Mitchell's plantations & along canal W. of same.  Here took the following:- 

Epitomus pygmaeus  1♀︎: not mtd.
Aspilota (Synaldis)  2♂︎♂︎, 1♀ = A. concolor 2♂︎♂︎, ant. both 22. 
A. cf. rudenticornis  ♀︎, ant. 18.
Dacnusa cf. aerolaris  about six (♂︎ & ♀︎). } None mtd. 
Proctos.  About a dozen, mostly Trichopria } None ntd.
Chalcids 6 or 7.
Small Staphylinid beetles swept in dozens & many species.

On return journey saw one Swallow near Esker.


12.4.52. 
In garden after heavy rain on 10th-11th & then hot sun, much growth.  Carex stricta & C. clandestina in flower, Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi & Viola hirta in bud.  Saxifraga rosacea in front garden with some flowers & Euphobia hiberna shoots up 3 to 4 inches. 


April 1952. 
Received from D.K. McE. Kevan a series (♂︎ & ♀︎) of an Ick bred from the Lesser Wax Moth Achroia grisella.  All appear to be Angitia chrysosticta.  Locality not given, but "England".

13th April 1953. 

Dull & showers in morning, but after 11 AM. brilliantly sunny all day.  Sun very hot.  Wind light, E. in Dublin, but S. SW. in hill & over plains in afternoon.  Left home in car about 2.15 & drove to Brittas Pond, where left car.  Walked up to Lynch Park & thence round W. side of Slieve Thoule & back over col 1144 ft. to car.  Swept a little along roadside at & S. of Lynch Park, where saw Bombus derhamellus, jonellus & lucorum (1♀︎ of each!) & Small Tortoiseshells & 1 Peacock Butterfly. 

Willow Warblers & Chiffchaffs frequent & saw & heard the 4 Whooper Swans as they flew up & down over the Brittas Ponds having been disturbed from the Blessington Lake where J.P. Brunker reported they had been for some time. having been +/- chased from the Brittas Ponds by the mate as the breeding season approached.  In forenoon saw Bombus agrorum (1st ♀︎), lucorum & terrestris ♀︎♀︎ & two ♀︎ Vespa sp. (either vulgaris or germanica;  & during dinner several Small White Butterflies.

Insects taken on roadside at Lynch Park, Co. DU., ca. 900-1000ft. 

Dacnusa areolaris  5♂︎♂︎, 1♀︎. 
Aphidius sp.  2♂︎♂︎, dark dark legs: none mtd.
