136. 5th July 1954. Left Bettyhill in shower, at 8 AM. by bus to Tongue, where met by hotel car from Durness & spent till 3.30 PM. on road to Durness, stopping several times to look for plants or sweep for insects. After rounding the Kyle of Tongue & turning W. over "A'Mhoine" ran through a heavy shower, but this had passed before we reached the watershed at 741 feet & afterwards, the day was almost perfect with glorious hot sun & blue seas & blue sky & the scenery superb. Stopped to investigate the flora of the lochans on each side of the watershed & at the long one S. of the road found much Carex curta, C. goodenowii var. juncea (I believe) in flooded edge of the lochan & a curious form of goodenowii with short ovate ♀︎ spikelets growing on dryish peaty ground some yards above water level. Much Drosera anglica also seen. Again stopped for an hour & a half at highest point of the road from outlet of Loch Hope to Loch Eriboll & went up to cliffs N. of Beinn Poll Ath-roinn, but found the rocks useless for plants & the lochan shown on Bartholomews' map had drained itself under the peat & the site almost dry. Here, above the site of the lochan Daisy found three flowering plants of Leuchorchis [[Leucorchis]] albida on a rock shelf. On the N. cliff saw many plants of a Hawkweed, also Oak & 137. Beech Fern, Golden Rod, a very little Vaccinium myrtillus (not seen in Bettyhill area!), but nothing of real interest. Next stopped for lunch on shore of Loch Eriboll at An t-Sron at about 12.30 noon & after lunch swept in birch scrub S. of road for about 40 minutes & here took the following insects:-- Taken at 1: = An-t-Sron, in birch scrub, Loch Eriboll, SS. 1.0-1.40 P.M.
