The first Appropriation by Congress for this purpose, was for the year 1839; and it has been continued yearly, in different amounts.

The purchases were made by the Assistant Assayer, William E. DuBois, who was informally put in charge of this business, and who rendered duplicate bills stating the particulars; one of which was retained in the Treasurer's custody in the Mint, the other sent to Washington, as usual.

No other account has been kept of these payments (except memoranda in small books) until the opening of this Book, which begins with the appropriation for the year ending June 30th 1856.

The previous payments, which always corresponded with the amounts appropriated, are herein recapitulated.
