Dear Francois Gerard:

In the last days of December, Somerset Maugham came in and paid me a very charming visit during Germain's absence.

I showed him a number of things; one especially attracted his attention - "The Green Dancer" by Degas, that you know well.

He had the intention of coming back to discuss various points of an eventual purchase for which I worked quite a bit, coming to a solution which I think would have been acceptable to him, but he left for California, then came back here for a short stay. I spoke to him today a few hours before his departure on the Queen Mary, and he said that he would be back before long and would pay us another visit.
