January 22, 1959

Dear Cesar:

As usual I enjoyed receiving your letter of January 17th and to notice particularly that you are working on your Seurat Catalogue.

To answer your queries, you are correct in assuming that the painting, "Eiffel Tower", as well as the drawing, "Fillette au Chapeau Niniche", are still mine and are in our private collection. Similarly I also own the drawing "l'Homme au Chapeau Melon", #3 of my book on the drawings of Georges Seurat and reproduced on plate III. In other words, it is also in the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Germain Seligman. On the other hand, I no longer have any for sale at my galleries.

Contrary to what you believe, I find business very slow, as I am trying to sell what people do not want; for to me, the impressionists and post-impressionists belong to the past, as the prices reached are completely beyond any sort of critical sense and understanding. It reminds me so much of the era of English portraits of pre-1929 but multiplied by ten, that I would not want to be caught again in any such debacle.

Your intention of going to Morocco sounds indeed very tempting were it not for the danger of being caught by some stray bullet. But of course, as usual, this is seen from afar and local conditions might be very different from what we imagine; and if by and by you do come over, as you allude to such a journey, do not fail to let me know.

Both Mrs. Seligman and Mrs. Parker appreciate your messages and wish to be remembered to you. With kindest thoughts,

Sincerely yours,

Germain Seligman
