& in accordance with the usual practice of the Q.M. Dept., yet from my lack of experience in that branch of its duties, I am not prepared so to asseverate.  Yet
(if I may be pardoned the suggestion) if I can be officially authorized so to assert, I will endeavour to correct this present impression, injurious to the service, the Q.M. Dept & especially to Capt. G.

Having the honor of but slight acquaintance with Capt. G. & been present but a very few minutes at his sale, I cannot of course assume the personal responsibility of endorsing him throughout, as I perhaps might do, in the case of other officers, in more intimate acquaintance with whom I am now honored.  Nor have I the honor of any acquaintance with his assistants here, or Mr. L. Montgomery of Lake Co.  If officially inquired of, why I have not sooner reported their statements adverse to Capt. G. in order that they maybe corrected, I am prepared to make an explanation, that I trust
will be satisfactory.
