State of North Carolina } Washington County } Personally appeared before me Alfred F. Garrett, who being duly sworn, declares & says, That he never abandoned his Lands in the County of Washington. That it is true he removed his family further into the interior of the Country, to wit, the County of Bertie first, then to the County of Nash; to avoid being so near the scene of conflict of Amer. his fame being outside of the Federal lines at Plymouth only three or four miles. He says that he has never taken up arms against the Government of the United States. That he appointed W.A. Hardison, who laid on his Land his agent - & so regarded him throughout - the entire war. That his land has always been outside the Federal lines, as a proof of it, the Confederate Govt., through it officers, compelled him to pay tax on said Lands. -That he had on his lands before he placed Hardison there, one Jerry Reid, who was conscripted & sent away.
