Grove Farm near Halifax Feb. 7th 1866 Genl. Ruger Dear Sir, Mr C.W. Smith now residing in the lower portion of this State, but recently from New England came to Buckingham Co Va in December last to see my Friend Dr W. G. Eppes on business. While in the county he entered into a written contract with Sam Bolling a coloured man of as much character & merit as any in Va, to rent and cultivate the farm of Dr. W.G. Eppes and Col: Bolling. I learn that Mr Smith continued to furnish the said Coloured Man Sam Bolling a sofficient number of Horses and mules to work the two Farms, and to supply all the Farming utensils, provisions tc and funds to pay off the hands & Teams engaged in cultivation of the said Farms.
