Maine's Woods 9:00 A.M.

Mar. 31, 1902
The Quail are mating this morning. I was down in Maine's Woods. They were spread all through the brush piles, singly and in pairs. I could hardly ever get sight of them before they flew.
[[marginalia]] actions [[/marginalia]] I located one pair but they flew when after walking a short distance I turned around to look at them. Saw one lying in the sun on a bank. After a time they began to call.

Transcription Notes:
Margin notes arranged against relevant section in the text. The margin note is effectively a reference to the text, which it seems clear is what Wetmore meant to do.
