Corner of Oak & 7th st. in Baraboo 12:45 M. April 9, 1902. This noon it was warm and sunny. A Downy Woodpecker was drumming on a dead limb in front of Pfannstiehls. [[marginalia]] drum [[/marginalia]] It was about 8 taps not quite so rapid as those of a Flicker. The reason for this was that the head was held higher. [[marginalia]] actions [[/marginalia]] The intervals between were used for pruning his feathers. These intervals varied from 3 or 4 to 30 seconds. He varied the key by moving up and down. [[marginalia]] note [[/marginalia]] Once he uttered the [[underlined]] sku he he he he [[/underlined]] note and a few angry skiks. Afterwards I saw a flicker drumming there and remembering the notes decided he had been chased away.
