chippers. They were feeding on weed seeds and all flew into the trees. One Chipping Sparrow lit in a very thick little tree. I walked under it and then it was about two feet above my head. It did not see me till I moved and then it flew away much frightened. All had a note like [[underlined]] tsut [[/underlined]]. Saw one adult Song Sparrow that had no tail. It flew across the river and as it had no tail it flew straight with a great fluttering of its small wings.

number of Goldfinches. The young ones kept up a constant [[underlined]] tse he[[/underlined]] all the time.
Red-headed Woodpeckers were surprisingly quiet. We only saw two in Volls pasture. They were both on the same tree and kept still on the shady side.
I heard a young Chippy calling and looked it up. It flew to a log nearby and I reached ^[[over]] and picked it up. It had a tail about two thirds the full length. It pecked at millers and little grasshoppers. It showed no fear at all of me but when my ^[[opened]] hand
