a fairly long shot too.  The bird crouched down drew in its head and extended the black patches on the side until it was truly fearful and striking object looking nothing like a bird. When I approached it gave me a sharp pick above my boot which I thought was amply high enough.  It felt as though some one had stuck me with a knife.

153. Dendroica striata. A. Wetmore. River Woods. North Freedom Wis. iris brown, bill, maxilla dusky mandible yellowish white. commissure same. side of mandible and tip slaty, tarsus yellowish brown. Length 5 1/4, wing 3, tail 1 15/16. [[male symbol]] stomach contents small insects.
