203. Buteo platypterus, A. Wetmore Busseyville Creek, Lake Koshkonong, Wis, iris amber bill black. base of mandible lighter. tarsus yellow. claws black. Length 15 3/4 wing 11 3/8 tail 6 5/8 [[female symbol]] ad. stomach contents. frogs.

This morning while we were watching them seine for carp two Black Terns came flying over the net probably hunting for minnows or perhaps attracted by the disturbance in the water. They circled and zigzagged with harsh squeaky notes and finally flew by me and I got both, one with each barrel. They were handsome birds and looked much larger on the wing they really were because of the large size of their wings.

After dinner we went up Busseyville Creek. Here was a tract of Heavy woods mostly ash and elms. The birds were those usually found in such locations. Redstarts were very thick. I shot an immature male and I also found a nest. A large Hawk flew up a short distance away and lit in a tree. As it flew out I shot it and it proved to be a Broad-winged Hawk. It had a few feathers in each wing and some in the center of the tail much darker than the rest of the plumage.

Here I heard and saw a few Wood Thrushes. We found a Wood Pewee's nest and also a Yellow Warblers.

Saw a pair of Green Herons and the mud was all marked by the tracks of Great Blue Herons of which one was seen.
