[[Underline]] Status of Mall Parking Ban [[/underline]]

Mr. Ripley reported that the most up-to-date information concerning the Mall parking ban is that the National Park Service (NPS) now plans to close Adams and Washington Drives no earlier than February 3, 1975. These streets will not be closed until a shuttle service is ready for operation from RFK Stadium. NPS plans to sign necessary contracts for this service in the next few days.

The National Park Service is still working on our request for additional visitor parking in West Potomac Park, Tidal Basin and on Ohio Drive. NPS was to have had specifics ready for us to review on January 15, then January 22; the date now is approximately January 29. We will insist upon identification of spaces to become available, pledges to patrol those spaces and ticket commuters and over-parkers, and plans for signs and visitor information.

The Board of Regents unanimously proposed that authority be delegated to the Executive Committee to represent the position of the Board of Regents in intervening in behalf of the Smithsonian Institution to alleviate the problems being created by the Mall parking ban and to seek immediate answers to questions previously posed to the National Park Service concerning substitute parking closer to the museums on the Mall.
