(?) major, (underlined) June 28 1960, II 31

peeks at the ground (including actual swallowing of food) (including to food are underlined) - followed by a general ruffle and shake.
It is obvious that, aside from the Tsh's (which are apparently always the lowest intensity and initial reactions) the type of reaction, and frequencies of reactions, to "Ooooooooo" sounds are largely or completely dependent upon the interval state of the bird(s) before and during the "Oooooooo"s. Sometimes general ruffles and shakes appear Gaping & (?) - some times the reverse. Sometimes preening is common - sometimes it is absent. Some times pecking at the ground is common - some times it is absent. Their variations are certainly not due to postural facilitation -as the birds always start from eventually similar and apparently unritualized ordinary standing or walking postures.
It looks very much as the Oooooooo" sounds merely stimulated all forms of activity. As if a bird reacted to the "Oooooooos" by performing whatever activity it was "thinking of doing" anyhow.
(The feeding movements, and the BW's,may be partly (Underlined)reaction to pecking at the ground, but this is only a complication, not a contradiction, of the explanation suggested above.)
TV is certainly not a usual component of the reaction to "Oooooooo" sounds. The brief TV of M described above on the preceding page is one of the very few, or only, (or only underlined) TV's I have ever observed in such circumstances. To escape cannot be an important factor in producing the "Oooooooo" reactions.
Attack & gregariousness would seem to be even less important. I have never seen a bird react to "Oooooooooo"s by performing any movement which could be interpreted as overt attack or an indi-
