(24) [[underlined]] Diglossa, [[/underlined]] May 25, 1960, II [[pink marking]] her using glasses after several minutes. At that time she was sitting facing an Andean Sparrow. She was in a low hunched posture, with head drawn in on the shoulders, [[underlined]] without [[/underlined]] either ruffling of the back feathers or waving of wings as in the BU of [[underlined]] lafresnayei [[/underlined]] [[/pink marking]] May 26, 1960 Cerro Atacaso [[underlined]] Diglossa, [[/underlined]] I. Watching in the same old area again this morning. [[pink marking]] To my surprise, we found one [[male symbol]] of the small black species near this area this morning. Singing. Perhaps significantly, this [[male symbol]] had selected a territory which received sunshine before the territories of all or most of the [[male symbol]]'s of the blue-spotted species. [[/pink marking]] [[pink and blue marking]] We found it very easy to distinguish between the songs of the [[male symbol]]'s of the 2 species, even at a distance. The song of the small black species may be considered an "aimless twitter". It also seems to have a definite "usual" length. The song of the blue-spotted species is stronger and slower; compared of comparatively distinct notes; and (almost certainly) much more variable in length. [[/pink and blue marking]] [[blue marking]] I got some more detailed information on the songs of the blue-spotted [[male symbol]]'s. There is considerable difference between the songs of different individuals at the present time. One [[male symbol]] we watched sang something like "Zraa Zraa Zraa [[underlined]] Zraa-a-Zaa [[/underlined]] Zraa Zraa ....." Mostly single notes. Only a few "doublets" (underlined in red above). Other [[male symbol]]'s sang almost nothing but doublets. As further confirmation of the hostile nature of the songs of this species – it should be noted that, several times today, one or more males who had been silent for at least several minutes suddenly began [[/blue marking]]
