Working in the usual place this morning.
[[margin]] Laf [[/margin]] 7:30 a.m. See an encounter between 2 Lafs. [[insertion]] [[2 checkmarks]] [[/insertion]] Apparently a dispute. The 2 birds hop & fly rapidly thru thick scrub. Some actual pursuits. Accompanied by brief bursts of accelerated song. Also 1 or 2 brief bursts of high, thin, moderately loud R. (When are not soft Brrrrrp Notes.) Probably also brief irregular series of soft notes. Each one of these notes soft might be transcribed by something like "Whit" or "chuck". Possible nothing more than aberrant CN's or AlCN's. (possibly whole series nothing more than aberrant, "stifled" song. Between pursuits, the more aggressive bird usually perched in an unritualized-looking "head forward threat" posture. Head held low. Neck stretched forward to some (variable) extent. No gaping No trace of wing-waving at any time during this encounter.

[[margin]] Laf [[/margin]] On the whole, the Lafs were surprisingly active this morning. Not as active as during the height of the breeding season, in previous years; but much more conspicuous (as least) than Aters or CC's.

[[margin]] Laf Ater [[/margin]] The one hostile encounter between a single Ater and a pair of Lafs (in general mixed flocks) [[underlined]] might [[/underlined]] suggest that the inter-specific "keeping apart" mechanisms are beginning to break down A seasonal effect?
