Mixed Diglossini, Mar. 14, 1966, II. [[circled]] 36 [[circled]] all the Scans heard Singing today have been in trees). [[margin]] CC [[/margin]] Then see single CC alone, 3 ft up in "hedge". Also see single [[underline]] Attapetes leucopterus [[/underline]] in hedge. Silent. Apparently alone. Rain starting 3:40. Quite hard. I have to retire to car. [[margin]] Scan [[/margin]] Scans stop Singing during hard rain. Rain becomes a little lighter. 3:45 pm, however, and the Scans resume [[underline]] immediately. [[/underline]] NODWAH See a single Yellow Grosbeak alone. In "hedge". [[margin]] CC [[/margin]] Also see pair [[underlined]] leucopterus [[/underlined]] alone. In hedge (This is exact same pot where CC was seen earlier.) Then hear Altapetes Whistle Song. [[underlined]] Completely [[/underlined]] overlapped by Scan Song Again & again Single Yell Grosbeak flies by alone 3:58 pm. 4:02 Further down road. See 2 [[underlined]] leucopterus [[/underlined]] fly by alone. Sun out again 4:07 pm. [[margin]] Scan [[/margin]] 8375 ft. Still more Scans Singing NODWAH. [[underlined]] Population of Scans here must be both enormous and dense. [[/underlined]] Some of the Singing Scans are perched as low as 25 ft up. But most seem to be around 50-70 ft up! More [[underlined]] leucopterus [[/underlined]] Song completely overlapped by Scan. [[margin]] Ater [[/margin]] COMMENT: This looks like an [[double underlined]] ideal [[/double underlined]] place for Aters. The fact that I have not seen any (so far) this afternoon is slightly puzzling. Probably they are present, but in non-breeding condition and "skulking". Going back up road. 4:16. Hear still more [[underlined]] leucopterus [[/underlined]] Whistle song completely overlapped by Scan. [[margin]] CC [[/margin]] 4:18. See single CC. Silent & alone. Flies into Eucalypt. Lands 20 ft up. Gradually moves at least 50 ft up. Definitely feeds on Eucalpyt flowers. Then I lose sight of the bird.
