Northern Peru

Mixed Diglossini, I
February 8, 1964
Chachapoyas

Just walking around outskirts of town this afternoon. Starting out from my hotel 7,850 ft according to my altimeter. Soon reach area of crop fields, hedges, and isolated patches of dense scrub. Not many tubular red flowers around, and the few that are visible don't seem to be the right type for Diglossini. No holes in them.

2:35pm. Catch one glimpse of CC in distance. Also hear lots of songs apparently uttered by CC's. More or less "twitters." Many notes, but quite regular, not very fluctuating. Quite loud and strong. [[underlined]] Perhaps [[/underlined]] [[??]]ally "Zee wee zee wee zee wee..." Sound very much like the songs of some members of the [[underlined]] carbonaria [[/underlined]] (s.l.) group.

Starts to rain about 3:15 pm.

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] 3:50 pm See single Brun perched alone, exposed, in a patch of thick scrub. About 10 ft above ground. Silent Flies away immediately. This area is ca 8100 ft.

[[margin]] Bari [[/margin]] 4:12 pm See a single [[male symbol]] Bari hopping up agave stalk in hedge Silent and alone. Then it is suddenly attacked and driven off by a single hummingbird. Didn't have time to identify the latter. No fancy tail plumes. More or less [[underlined]] Colibri [[/underlined]] size and shape. 7990 ft.

[[margin]] CC [[/margin]] 4:20 pm Hear what sound like more CC songs in distance.
Ending observations 4:30 pm.

Perhaps this area will give me to data to compare with my relatively low altitude observations in Venezuela and Colombia!

[[margin]] Bari [[/margin]] In the presence of Bari an indication that is is dry here, at least sometimes? (It certainly seems wet enough now!)
