Mixed Diglossini, I.

February 9, 1964
Chachapayas

Going to walk in same areas this morning as yesterday afternoon. Still too dark when I pass first CC area to see or hear anything. Some sort of Dawn Chorus going by 5:45 am. Most Andean Sparrows and roosters. Arrive where Bari was seen yesterday 5:55. Starting to get light Some cloud in sky. Warm-ish. No wind.

[[margin]] Bari [[/margin]] 6:16 See single [[male symbol]] Bari perched on leaf agave in hedge. 3-4 ft above ground. Standing normal posture, slightly diagonal. Alone. Utters trill after trill. Apparently "song." Each trill quite brief. Length apparently very determinate. Quite high p. Then it itched. Quite loud. I shall call these trills "R"s, for the sake of uniformity.

The bird flies about and utters R's from several perches.

Then shuts up 6:19. Then starts again. Sings from leaves of several agave plants Shuts up again.

[[margin]] Bari [[/margin]] Then see single [[female symbol]] or juv Bari feeding in nearby hedge (hedge quite low but very thick). Silent. Pierces tubular blue flowers. An Andean sparrow lands only 1 ft or less away. Bari ignores it. Eventually flies away.

[[margin]] Scan [[/margin]] Incidentally, there [[underlined]] is [[/underlined]] a [[underlined]] Colibri coruscans [[/underlined]] in the neighborhood.

[[margin]] CC [[/margin]] After Bari shuts up, I hear CC singing from several perches in Eucalypt 50 ft away. 30 ft to 40 ft above ground. Most song phrases "Tazee tazee tazee" or "Tazee tazee tazee tazee-uh." Eventually triplet Some phrases include 1 or 2 extra "Tazee"s. Catch one glimpse of bird, diagonally from underneath Posture rather peculiar. Wings drooped, tail slightly coiled.

[[margin]] CC Brun [[/margin]] While CC continues triplet song, a Brun suddenly starts to
