Mixed Diglossini, Feb. 5, 1964, VI. [[circled]] 59 [[/circled]]

[[margin]] IV Brun [[/margin]] 4:44. See single IV hummer feeding in area where AA Bruns were a few minutes ago, but distant from where they are now.

There may well be 4 or 5 Bruns in the neighborhood.

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] See one [[checkmark above one]] singing ordinary songs with whole breast and belly (including gray sides) [[underlined]] ruffled [[/underlined]]!

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] [[image - drawing of bird showing ruffled feathers on breast, belly, and side]] All these display postures and movements are presumably hostile.

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] It is obvious, of course, that the Bruns down here have already entered upon the breeding season!!!

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] None of the "song" twitters I have heard this afternoon have included R components. Usually or always relatively slow (i.e. they are more like the songs of Carbos than are the songs of Bolivian Bruns).

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] NOTE: The twitters uttered as "greetings" by the Bruns here this afternoon were accelerated and [[underlined]] fluctuating [[/underlined]]. As I remember the "song" twitters of Bolivian Bruns, they were accelerated and [[underlined]] non [[/underlined]]-fluctuating

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] 5:04. One Brun feeding quietly in Eucalypt. Another lands [[checkmark above lands]] about 5 ft away. Utters R-Zaza as it does so. Then both sit silently, without moving, in special postures. Belly greatly fluffed, head more or less drawn in on shoulders. (Postures look very much like postures sketched immediately above, without the ruffling) Then one bird actually attacks & chases the other! Attack is silent.

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] Proof that Belly fluffing is hostile!!!
