VUILLARD, Edouard (1865-1940) [[underline]]"LA MANSARDE"[[/underline]] Oil on cardboard applied on a wood panel: 18 x 25-3/4" Signed and dated upper right "Vuillard 97" At the right a man and woman are seated at a table across from one another. A lamp with green shade throws its light onto the table littered with sheets of white paper; the man is writing while the woman reads a paper. The blue ceiling and mahogany beams above the light are illuminated in sharp outline. To the left in the gloom is a piano on which rests a vase of red flowers. Beside the piano stands a brown wood chair with red plush back. [[underline]]Collection:[[/underline]] Schmoll, Paris (Parisien collector who, among other pictures, owns the celebrated Degas, No. 75 of the Third Degas Auction, April 17 - 19, 1919). G. Bernoulli, Bâle Representing Mr. and Mrs. T. Natanson in the attic, used as studio of their home in Villeneuve-Sur-Yonne. This information given by Mlle. M. Schneider-Maunoury, assistant to M. Jacques Salomon who is compiling for publication, material on Vuillard. In Mlle. Schneider-Maunoury's letter of November 21, 1949 she says: "...... 'La Mansarde' qui est en effet un magnifique tableau; il s'agit du grenier de la maison des Natanson à Villeneuve sur Yonne....." ^[[JS]]
