Latin America, and in the Foreign Currency Program. You may, of course, want to consider staying on in Korea. We should be able to see more clearly what opportunities exist for you through the Smithsonian within another month or two.

In this regard, you may be interested in the new proposal I am submitting to the Smithsonian Foreign Currency Program. You will see that Korea already serves as a model for long-range planning in other countries.

While dictating this letter I received the enclosed letter from Dr. Kang. My answer is self-explanatory.

I think it would be very worthwhile to have you give the series of lectures mentioned in your letter of 29 December. This will give you more contact with both students and faculty and sufficient time to build up more knowledge about Korea that will be of relevance in developing the long-range proposal.

I am pleased that you are going along with Kim's broader concept of the overall plan, which evolved during discussions here in Washington. We must think in terms of a long-range program in a very broad context and then narrow down the proposal to realistic terms. I think we must tie the DMZ project in with the evolving Museum and with a long-range plan in terms of biological sciences in Korea.

I have just talked with Harvley Savely about the revised time schedule outlined above. He concurs, and suggests that we submit a request for renewal of the Air Force contract sometime in April or May, well in advance of our renewal date. For the renewal we will need a statement of the progress we have made, together with some strong and imaginative statements about the projected project. You and Kim should get down on paper ideas that will go into the request for renewal.

I hope that Kim's visit has been a moral stimulation for you. Seemingly he could not have come at a better time!

With kind personal regards to you and Aura.

Sincerely yours,

Helmust K. Buechner
