Pat Patterson was so impressed with the attitude and potential of museums and their staffs in Korea that he went to see Dr. Hornig to ask that the President take an interest in their progress. The OST asked the regional science attaché to look into prospects, with special reference to museums and their programs. Mr. Ripley asked Frank Taylor and me to try to think up some kind of response on the part of the SI, but it is likely to be of broader import than just museum training and development. Consequently I suggest that you receive a copy of the attaché's report as soon as we have it to see whether research activities might be the primary emphasis of any SI cooperative effort in Korea, or whether they would be subsidiary to a rather general effort aimed mostly at museum development and training in both science and cultural fields. I attach a paper from the OST on a proposal for an institute of applied science which might be of some value for background.
