[[underline]]"YOUNG GIRL ABDUCTED BY A CENTAUR"[[/underline]]

Sepia watercolor: 7-1/4 x 9-5/8"

A centaur is making his way over a hill toward a village whose church steeple and houses are visible in the valley on the right. On his back rides a young girl, her dark hair caught up by the wind. She is held forcibly by the centaur who grasps her arm with his right hand and carries a large stick with his left. A quiver of arrows is beside the girl on the centaur's back.

This subject is taken from Greek mythology and refers to the famous battle between the Lapithae and the centaurs, which occurred when the latter became intoxicated at the wedding of Pirithous, their half-brother and king of the Lapithae, and attempted to carry off the bride and other women.
