Dear Mr. Bier:

Both my wife and I were so sorry not to have been able to accept Mrs. Bier's and your invitation, as it would have given us so much pleasure to spend an evening in your company. As we expected, both Mrs. Seligman and I returned quite late to town on that Thursday- please do express anew our regrets and thanks to Mrs. Bier.

In a catalogue I just received from Sotheby, sale of July 23-
No. 123 - an attractive German parcel gilt silver chain from the late Delmar Collection.

I remember it well from way back and would be obliged to you were you to bid for it up to £200 (two hundred pounds). I would not be surprised if we did not obtain it on account of a much higher reserve. The price it had been held for by the executors a short while ago was considerably higher. Be this as it may, this is all I am willing to pay for it.

No. 125 - a memento mori in form of a skull.

[[underlined]] If it is in good condition [[/underlined]], do bid it up to £60 (sixty pounds).

You will notice our address at the top of this letter, where, with a couple of trips, we will remain until the end of August, and where I am looking forward to hearing from you as to the results of this auction.

Should you have been able to obtain either one or both of these items, would you be good enough to indicate the amount in dollars, as it is in that currency that I would send you a check. Buying pounds in this small community where I have no account would certainly complicate and delay things considerably.

Thanking you in advance for your kind help and with best regards to both of you in which my wife joins me,

Sincerely yours,

Germain Seligman
