New York, New York 10022

June 28, 1968

Dear Herbert:

The drawings acquired from you were awaiting my arrival in New York. I am very pleased with them and particularly with the portrait which you described as being by Jean CLOUET.

In this connection, I would appreciate hearing from you whether - besides your own - you had the opinion of another knowledgeable person who confirmed the attribution to this artist. Before going any further, let me say that I personally will not be impressed one way or the other !

However, before making a statement to an eventual purchaser I would like to learn whether I can have a firmer basis for this attribution. Namely, in the de Pass catalogue which we have just looked up the portrait is recorded only as "School of Fontainebleau", without any name of artist. There are very few portrait drawings by Jean Clouet and comparing it with the few reproductions I have in my files I have no objection to calling it by this name, but as I said above,if it could be backed it would be preferable.

I am sure you will understand the spirit which prompts me to write in this vein, and thanking you in advance for your kind answer.

With warm regards,
Yours,

Germain Seligman
