Dear Herbert:

Do have my thanks for your interesting letter of November 5th. Unfortunately, I am unable at the present writing to come to a decision as regards the Guardi painting.

However, in the meantime, I am wondering whether you could help me out with the following:

A. I am under the impression that the price you mentioned this Spring for the one you had was considerably lower than the one you quote for the third Guardi. Strangely enough, my London records have gone astray and my memory is failing me.

B. What actually became of the large Guardi paintings ? At the Burlington House, five were exhibited and three other ones were published in the Burlington Magazine, thus making a total of eight.

C. What became of the five which were exhibited ? One, I know, was purchased by the National Gallery, Washington. Thus, it leaves four which would still be available ? Of the three reproduced in the Burlington Magazine you had two. Is this correct ? Did any of these two, as far as you know, go to an American Museum ?

D. And of these three, which is the one that you offered me this Spring ? If I am not mistaken, it was reproduction #8 of the Burlington Magazine.

E. Have you had an opportunity of seeing #10, the one you are writing about, and judging of its condition?

F. And do you know who cleaned and restored the other ones? Cleaning and restoring would be quite a problem here in New York.

Thanking you in advance for your kind answers, and with best regards,

Yours,

Germain Seligman
