March 13, 1973

Dear Herbert:

Many thanks for your letter of March 8th, which really reached me in the minimum of time. I was indeed glad to receive your cable referring to the arrival of my letter of March 2nd, for the newspapers here describe the situation in England as bordering on a general strike, so that we do not know whether the postal service is involved or not. In the hope that it is not, as you write, I trust you will received these lines.

Your frankness of course is appreciated, and we will forget about the 20th of March auction. The CASTIGLIONE is a nice drawing, you say, but hardly characteristic of what we can expect of this master.

However, today I am calling your attention to the Sotheby auction, "Fine Old Master Drawings", March 22nd. I find No. 13, SCHOOL OF FONTAINEBLEAU, quite interesting. I especially say interesting, for I do not recall ever having seen a drawing of tat period stricly limited to decorative. But, is it of the 16th century, for, having no stylistic characteristics, it could have been made at any time.

Would you be good enough to convey your opinion and should it be worthwhile, could you add a few details to the very pithy description. Has it any color, for instance, and was is cut at the one edge, as we could assume.

No. 50, G?B. PIAZZETTA which does [[underline]]not[[/underline]] interest me, looks so weak and washed out. It is probably by one of the imitators.

With kind regards,

Yours,

Germain Seligman
