Sir:

I have the honor to submit herewith a report upon work done during the month of June, 1883, in the Department of Birds.

The Curator was absent, by official order, during the first half of the month, making "collections of birds, and their nests and eggs, and other objects of natural history, for the National Museum", in Southern Illinois. During his absence, the routine work of the department was satisfactorily attended to by the assistants, Messrs C. W. Shoemaker and J. L. Ridgway, who were left in charge.

The work accomplished since the 18th inst. may be summarized as follows:-
