I have the honor to submit here with a report upon work done during the month of August, 1883, in the Department of Birds:-

The accessions to the skin-collection include 134 specimens (Museum register nos. 91846-'979). The most important lots being 22 specimens (18 species) from Ernest E. T. Seton, Carberry, Manitoba, and 102 specimens from Chas. H. Townsend, Baird, California; the latter lot including 44 species, many of the skins being parents of nests and eggs collected.

The egg-collection has been increased by 61 entries (Museum register Nos. 18855-'915), most of which were contributed by Messrs. Seton and Townsend, the former sending 16 specimens (entries) and species, among them a nest
