place? I must say that we did not meet with even the shadow of a wolf. What a senseless joke!]
We left Yun-ch'eng on the 21st and [spent two more days in Chung-t'lao[strikethrough]p[/strikethrough]shan south of the Salt Lake. We did some cave-hunting and examined a few tomb-like places; but no indication fo age was found. On the 22nd, we arrived at Hsia-hsien; -
[strikethrough]The[/strikethrough] center of the traditions of the ancient Hsia Dyansty. [strikethrough]is located at Hsia-hsien[/strikethrough]. the temple of the Great Yu and the tombs of his descendants as well as many of the famous ministers of th[strikethrough]is[/strikethrough]at dynasty are said to be located here, and all these I visited; [strikethrough]and[/strikethrough] but I must confess that I am not at all able to determine whether, judged by their appearance, they are real tombs or not. They all look like the ordinary burial grounds [strikethrough]tombs (Fig.52-54)[/strikethrough], except that they are larger. [strikethrough]in size than the ordinary tomb. But something burned out rather unexpectedly [/strikethrough] However, while on our way to visit these tombs the uexpected happened. Mr.Yuan was the first to see it. [strikethrough](PLate XI).[/strikethrough] The site, extend[strikethrough]ed[/strikethrough]ing to several mou[strikethrough]s[/strikethrough] of land, [strikethrough]It[/strikethrough] is apparently [strikethrough]a[/strikethrough] larger [strikethrough]site[/strikethrough] than the one [strikethrough]that[/strikethrough] we found at Chiao-T'ou-ho, and the pottery [strikethrough]content[/strikethrough] is somewhat different too. While we were pick up at random the [strikethrough]pottery[/strikethrough] shards on the exposed surface, the villagers gathered in large numbers, so we did not stat [strikethrough]there[/strikethrough] very long lest there be too much excitement created.

When we left An-i-hsien, the magistrate had given [strikethrough]gave[/strikethrough] us a copied list of the names and [strikethrough]the[/strikethrough] locations of the various votive stones [strikethrough]works that[/strikethrough] which are still scattered in the different villages of his district, and [strikethrough]An-i-hsien.[/strikethrough] as we wore on our way northward again, [strikethrough]so[/strikethrough] we determined to stop and see [strikethrough]visit[/strikethrough] some of them. [strikethrough] village stoneworks in these villages.[/strikethrough] Three places [strikethrough]of them[/strikethrough] were visited on the 25th and the 25th; where besides stelae we saw [strikethrough]. there are[/strikethrough] also a number of individual Buddhist[strikethrough]ic[/strikethrough] figures which are preserved in good condition, [strikethrough](Fig.56)[/strikethrough] the most perfect
