"We are within the grounds of the Residency, and can see the upper portion of the Residency building, now and historic ruin. Sir Henry Lawrence occupied a room on the first floor; a shell from a siege-gun of the enemy plunged through the roof and exploded in his room and a fragment tore his thigh from his body. In his last moments he would frequently rouse himself and call out 'Save the ladies, and never surrender.'

At such a time military honors could not be extended to him, -only a hurried prayer amid the booming of the guns and the flash of rifles, as his body was lowered into a pit just beyond Residency yonder.........A cementery lies just behind the Residency. To this day no native is allowed to enter the sacred ground. Two thousand heroic men and women lie buried there. A simple stone masks the grave Sir Henry Lawrence; it bears a touching inscription by himself: "Here lies Henry Lawrence, who tried to do his duty. May God have mercy on his soul.,

On the mound at the left we see a beautiful cross of white marble, on it is inscribed. 'In memory of Major General Sir Henry Lawrence, K. B. C., and the brace men who fell in defense of the Residency, 1857.'

That man at the left occupied during the seige a house only a few hundered yards to hte left. He sits in friendly confab with a Hindu who was among the besiegers, but whether the Hindu took any active part I don not know. Now both are Residency guides; the latter accompanied me to the cemtery but was not allowed to enter." (Extract from India through the Stereoscope, by James Ricalton.)
