This donation consists of material relating to Walter Wellman's polar explorations (1894-1909) and the role his brother, Arthur Wellman, played in managing the base camp on Dane's Island during the 1909 attempt to reach the North Pole by air. The following material is included: correspondence between Walter and Arthur Wellman and their respective immediate families, as well as correspondence between the Wellmans and Andrew Aagaard; an 1889 financial ledger sheet kept by Aagaard; newspaper articles about the Wellmans' adventures; airship fabric; black and white photographs of Wellman, the airship, crew members, and the base camp, including quarters and the airship hangar; glass plate photographs of the same scenes, which were evidently used by Arthur Wellman for his lectures; two copies of a poster announcing Arthur Wellman's lecture entitled, "Spitzbergen;" seven promotional postcards; and Arthur Wellman's notebook, which contains a Last Will and Testament, notes on the condition of the ship, and diary entries from the 1909 polar attempt. Watson Perrygo - Specimen lists, Haiti, 1929
How do you measure the wider impact of hurricanes and earthquakes in Haiti, where natural catastrophes occur regularly? It's a question that the Smithsonian has been a part of trying to answer for the past several decades--whether it's helping recover cultural heritage materials after Haiti's most recent earthquake or documenting native wildlife in the 1920s, like Watson Perrygo. Perrygo, a field collector and exhibit specialist for what is now the National Museum of Natural History, traveled through the bays, coasts, and islands of Haiti, learning about the unique fish populations native to the region. Help us in the important task of documenting wildlife in the changing Haitian climate. Transcribe Perrygo's specimen lists from his 1929 expedition to Haiti and make his findings accessible for scientists in their ongoing research into how Haiti's wildlife has changed over time.

Wedding scrapbook compiled by Lollaretta Pemberton
Lollaretta Elizabeth Pemberton (1895-1979) married Grover Joseph Allen (1889-1984) on July 10, 1939 in Marshall, Texas. The wedding was the talk of the town as it was featured in multiple local newspapers at the time. Ms. Pemberton, a graduate of Prairie View College and the Tuskegee Institute, was head of the Home Economics Department at Central High School in Marshall and Mr. Allen was a post-office employee. As with most brides, Miss Pemberton kept a scrapbook of “Wedding Memories” with all the particulars of her big day including, newspaper clippings of her dream wedding dress, the wedding invitation and a list of guests and their gifts. The scrapbook also details the bridal shower and honeymoon in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The wedding scrapbook offers invaluable information on weddings taking place during segregation in the South as well as highlighting African American migration. Immediately after the wedding and honeymoon, the couple moved to Chicago and later, in the 1940s to California. Lollaretta Pemberton Allen’s wedding gown, scrapbook, and photographs are featured in the inaugural exhibitions at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. With many fold-outs, handwritten entries, and newspaper clippings there is a lot to discover; help us transcribe the Wedding Scrapbook as part of the wedding season.

Welcome letter in Spanish from the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., 1949
English and Spanish Imagine launching a campaign to raise $55,000 in 1945, the year that World War II ended. This bold challenge by the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) exemplifies the highly organized activism of the clubwoman movement. In 1935, educator Mary McLeod Bethune founded the NCNW, building on the legacy of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs (NACW), founded in 1896 to combat lynching. Both united local African American women’s clubs across the U.S. Clubwomen supported African American communities in myriad ways: fighting poverty, providing education, offering child care for working mothers, advocating for civil rights, and striving for international peace. A diverse collection of documents from the 1940s to 1960s awaits transcription, such as event programs, flyers, and tickets; an obituary; a meeting agenda in Spanish; and, a leadership handbook. Learn more about NACW programs that honored abolitionist Frederick Douglass and raised funds to preserve his home in Washington, D.C. and NCNW programs on cultural exchanges with British women after World War II. Look for the integral relationship of church and community; churches often hosted clubwoman events. Notice the presence of music and art, verbally and visually. Discover how African American clubwomen carried out their mission of “lifting as we climb,” and find a message written in the stars.
