Armstrong Manual Training School Yearbook, 1902-1903

Help us make this fragile Armstrong Manual Training School yearbook more accessible and searchable! Armstrong Manual Training School was authorized by congress as a vocational high school for African American youth in Washington, DC, in 1902. The Renaissance Revival building was designed by architect Waddy B. Wood and named for Samuel C. Armstrong (1839-1893), a white commander of an African American Civil War regiment. On September 24, 1902 Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) delivered the keynote speech during the dedication ceremony. In 1996 the school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It currently serves the local community as the Armstrong Adult Education Center.

Arthur Dove (1880-1946) Draft of a letter to Alfred Stieglitz, May 1933 Arthur and Helen Torr Dove papers, 1905-1975 In 1933, painter Arthur Dove drafted these letters to collector and museum founder Duncan Phillips. Dove drafted this response to Phillip’s proposal to cut the painting, The Bessie of New York, in half. Dove strongly disagreed with the idea but did not want to offend an important patron. Today the painting is still fully intact and in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Arthur Stelfox - Diary of insects, etc., chiefly hymenoptera, 1936 - 1937

Today, declines in the populations of bees and other pollinators, important contributors to environmental heath and biodiversity, have given rise to renewed calls for study such as the United States' "Pollinator Research Action Plan." In Ireland, only 122 species of hymenoptera had been documented prior to 1924. That year, naturalist Arthur Wilson Stelfox reported another 53 new species, increasing the known species in Ireland by almost half. Stelfox's subsequent collection of specimens in the years that followed documented more still. Please join us in the transcription of his field diary of his collection trips in 1936 and 1937 which range from the northwestern coast of Ireland to Kilkea Castle in the southeastern countryside.

Arthur Stelfox - Diary of insects, vol. 9, July 1937- July 1938

Irish naturalist Arthur W. Stelfox makes identifying insects seem romantic. He describes “fine” and “joyous” mornings and relaxing lunches near bridges and sand dunes. And then Stelfox dives right into noting the Hymenoptera species he observes, which is arguably less romantic, but crucial to the field. In this 1937-38 field book, the naturalist travels to Wexford and Kinlough, among other destinations in Ireland. Included in this field book are his very detailed notes of the species he observed, actual specimens taped inside, and some very challenging handwriting. Come for the insects. Stay for the comradery of transcribing difficult penmanship and making Stelfox’s work more accessible with your fellow volunpeers!

Arthur W. Stelfox - Diary from 16th Aug. 1944 till 8th Aug. 1946, vol. 15

This fifteenth volume of Irish naturalist Arthur W. Stelfox's personal record of collecting hymenoptera specimens around the Irish countryside, this time in and near Athdown, Royal Canal, Rye Water and Phoenix Park. His collection, gathered over decades and eventually donated to the Smithsonian Institution, provided the research material he and the next generation of entomologists would use to study changes in hymenoptera species over time. Please help us to transcribe his detailed notes. Zooming in where his pencil writing is faint on some pages will be a great help.
