Lilly Martin Spencer papers: Cosmopolitan Art Journal, 1850s-1860s

About the Project

Lilly Martin Spencer refused to give up her art career upon her marriage to Benjamin Spencer in 1844. In fact, she became the main breadwinner in their household and one of the most well-known American artists of the mid-1800s. Her husband, on the other hand, stayed home and managed their household, supporting her work. Join the Archives of American Art as we shine a light on her life!
