In the years leading up to the economic crash of 1929, A. S. Hitchcock, a Principal Biologist of United States Department of Agriculture, traveled across two continents collecting botanical specimens. His trips took him to Victoria Falls, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tenerife Island and Cape Town in Africa, to rainforests in the American Northwest, to Newfoundland in Canada and to Kew Gardens in the United Kingdom. These photographs document not only landscapes and vegetation but also the villages and local people he encountered. Please help us transcribe the captions in this visual record of his far ranging trips between 1927 and 1929.
