Transcription
by receiving information from the Chairman of Committee on Education, of a box from Holy Trinity Ch, in Phila containing Christmas presents for my little ones. Twas expected that it would reach here in time for Christmas Day; but owing to detention at the Express Office in Washington I did not receive it until the day before New Year. I proposed holding a Festival on New Year day, but the weather was very inclement, and the Pastor whom I invited to address the school failing to appear, it was postponed until the Monday following; and then the contents of the box were brought forth - candies, scissors, knives, marbles, books, a few pictures and toys for the tiny ones. It was truly a season of special rejoicing to the children, and one had only to look at their glistening eyes and widely extended mouths, to convince him that they were having a "mighty good time". The Pastor from Marlboro having arrived, addressed the school in the most appropriate manner. The children having sung the Christmas carol Star of Bethlehem the benediction was pronounced. I am sure the friends who enabled me to make this Festival, would have felt more than repaid by witnessing the happiness their liberality created. With regard to the purchase of the Maps the Com on Education intends holding a "Fair" this evening, the proceeds for the benefit of the school, and I will confer with them at the earliest opportunity concerning the matter, and report to you immediately.
