87 Bureau R.F. & A.L. Office Wilkesboro, N.C. May 11th 1868 Henry M. Whittelsy Chief Quarter Master Sir Your communication of the 5th instant returning receipts for property left at this place by Lieut J. F. Allison, to be corrected by including the item one cord of wood supposed to have been left with the other property in question, has been received, and in reply I have the honor to state that: No quantity of wood whatever has been found by me as left by Lieut. Allison The other property in question, I found upon my arrival here, together with a quantity of rubbish belonging to Mr. Cowles, locked in the room that Mr. Allison had occupied as an office. [] L. 99 E. M. 29. [] 88 Mr Cowles who had received the property in charge being absent, it was given me possession of by his son Cameron who is also absent at this time, and there being no member of the family left here, I have no means of ascertaining readily about the wood - Possibly Mr Cowles' family consisting (until broken up recently) of several sons with a house keeper and servants, may have consumed it and forgotten to mention the fact to me. Mr. Cowles would know whether the wood was left, but is not expected to return in several months from a tour north - Certainly no wood came into my possession as left by Lieut. Allison. In order to make my receipts correspond with the invoices I expected in return, and to facilitate my returns to the department, I have receipted for several articles more of Stationary [[strikethrough]] items [[/strikethrough]] I received
