To His Excellency, Andrew Johnson, President of the United States, Sir, I have the honor to ask the appointment of Chaplain, with the view of rendering service in the Freedmen's Bureau, as at present constituted under Maj. Genl. Howard or at some post of the U. States, where a vacancy may exist, or an appointment remains to be made. I have served as Chaplain both in the field and hospital for a period of nearly four years, two thirds of the time at Nashville Tenn. The accompanying papers will attest my standing, as well as the manner in which I have performed my duties. If your Excellency is pleased to reappoint me, I shall be grateful for the opportunity of rendering some additional service to the Country, besides being personally obligated by the favor extended. I am, very Respectfully Your Obedient Servant C. Van Santvoord Schenectady N. York Feb 28th 1866.
