On the 10th day of August 1866 visited Mr J W Cook Plantation near Arcada Mr Cook not at home Mrs Cook stated that Mr Cook and Mr Bunch whiped Alford a colord man that he was whiped for playing cards contrary to Mr Cooks orders that it was setting a bad example before her children that the said Alford was not driven off did not know how much Mr Cook was to pay him per month or year did not pay him did not know that he was going to leave Lee Calendar Colord man in the imploy of J W Cook states that he is working for Mr Cook for $150.00 per year for one year was present on Satterday morning when Mr Cook and Mr Bunch whiped Alford he was badly whiped he holowed very loud was whiped with a lether strop a stiff bugy strop, was cut up badly. He was whiped in the stable in the horse lot. We play cards some times Mr Cook has given us leave to play cards at the house Mr Cook whiped him first till he got tired and then Mr Bunch finished whiping him Alford left on Monday Morning for Sparta to report to the captain Did not hear Mr Cook order him to leave did not know how many lashes Alford had Mrs Cook here stated that Mr Cook whiped him not only for playing cards but for imputance and insolance
