The state of Texas County of Tarrant To the Chief of the Freedmans Beaurea For the District of Texas Your petitioners would respectfully represent that owing to the unsettled condition of the Freedman in this county growing out of an attrocious murder &c. committed in this county on the persons of two Freedmen near the Town of Birdville Texas on last Saturday night who were taken from their homes and outrage & one brutaly murdered and the other badly if not mortaly wounded who only escaped death by crawling in to a bunch of Woods and fighting death, and for other reason not necessary to name would respectfully as that Dr B.F. Barkely of Birdville Tarrant County Texas be appointed Agent of the Freedmens Beauro for this county They would furthur represent that Dr B.F. Barkely has the confidence of the entire community bothe white and black that he is a loyal citizen of the United States and alway has alway maintained the reputation of being an uncompromising Union man and we take a pleasure in reccommending him as being one of the best appointments that could be made to that position Birdville Tarrant Co Tex Aug 22d 1866 Hamilton Hurst J B Edens G W Jack G W Allen M.D W.S.
