Near Catlets Station O.&.A, R.R. Fauquier County Virginia February 3rd 1866 To the Superintending Officer of the Freedmens Bureau Warrenton Virg'a Sir. I have now on my Hands a Blind Woman with Her Daughter an Infant Three years old the 21st March. The Woman (Sarah) is now About Forty Years of Age. Blind from Her Birth, She was Especially Cared for & Tenderly raised by me, And has continued to share with Food & raiment up to this Moment of Time Exhausting During the Continuance of the late Unnatural Fratricidal War all my means left me by Genl Brenker & Shields Straglers from their Armies. I have Applied to the General Goverment for Remuneration for the property Taken from me & used or Destroyed by them but as yet I am not inform'd by the Hon'ble Secretary of War that Any Action by Congress has been Taken upon My Petition which He Notified me He should do when had. Left stript of everything I applied to Gen'l Mead [[Meade]] for subsistence which He kindly Order'd me to be furnish'd upon Five Days Ration returns at a Time during the Time that Gen'l Ayres remaind Encamp'd at Catlets since which Time We Myself, Wife Blind Woman & Her Daughter have Often fared badly without sometimes even a little coarse Bread with the substitute Rye for Coffee without Milk Sugar or Molasses I think Sir that you will Agree with me that in the Emancipation of Slavery by the Government; devolves upon it according to every principle of Humanity, Religion & Equity to provide for such as are by Nature incapable of Making provision by Labour for themselves & will if not incompatible with present instructions Forward us to Catlets Station such supplies as Hunger & Nakedness require to prevent suffering, as we are using the last side of Bacon I have or know how I shall be able to procure I forward this to you by My Son Thos. C McLearen
