Respectfully transmitted to the Sub. A.C. dist. of New Berne (thro Hd. Qrs. Asst. Comr. No. Car.) Sedwick How left the plantation of Maynard Ham in the spring or summer of 1865 and went to New-Berne, N. Ca. Sally Best left the plantation of Nicholas Best about the same time and also went to New Berne. I infer that the persons named above and referred to in the letter are those sought; and am informed indirectly that they now reside at New Berne N.C. (Sgd.) C.E. Compton Maj. & S.A.C. Bu. R.F. & A.L. Office Asst. Supt. Claim Div. New Berne, N.Ca. July 23rd 67. Respectfully returned-although diligent search and inquiry have been made for the within named persons; no trace of them has been found in New Berne N.C. (In explanation of the delay in returning this paper I beg leave to state that I have been 159 on sick leave for three weeks past) (Sgd.) A. Coats 1st Lt. & R.C. in charge Bu. R.F. & A.L. Hd. Qrs. Asst. Comr. Va. Richmond, Va Aug. 1st 67. Respectfully returned to Captain Jno. A. McDonnell, S.A.C. inviting attention to endorsements of Major C.E. Compton, S.A.C. and L.A.
